Mirela Tugurlan was born on the 4th September 1980 in Focsani, Romania. She began gymnastics at 8 years old in her hometown club of CSS Focsani, same as team mate Gina Gogean. Her parents are Marinic and Frosa Tugurlan, an auto mechanic and a seamstress respectively. Tugurlan's favorite apparatus is the uneven bears. Her favorite gymnasts are Nadia Comaneci, Lavinia Milosovici and Gina Gogean.

Mirela Tugurlan started gymnastics at a rather late age, compared to the rest of her team mates. Although she was not a leading gymnast throughout her time on the Romanian National team, her consistency and steady performances has contributed to several team medals in major competitions. Tugurlan has a brother named Daniel and she enjoys watching horror movies and reading in her spare time. Her favorite subjects in school are physics and chemistry. Tugurlan retired at the end of 1997 and she went ahead to study to be a coach. |
